An operation led by the Governor of the Western Region following a denunciation of the inter-Management Group of Cameroon, GICAM, led to the seizure of 580 cartons of illegal cigarettes seized.
Despite the measures taken by the government, including the adoption of legislation for unlawful commercial activities and actions in the field jointly by the Ministry of Trade and GICAM, the illicit trade in cigarettes continues to wreak havoc on Cameroon.
Also, GICAM sounded the alarm about this in a letter dated September 12, 2015 addressed to the Governor of the West Region.
GICAM sought the intervention of the authorities for the seizure of illicit goods with a stock of more than 580 cartons of cigarettes.
In addition, the commission to hunt down those involved in smuggling consists of representatives of the gendarmerie, the police, the Ministry of Commerce, Customs, Public Health, Taxation and GICAM.
